South Carolina Interpreting Services for the Deaf (SCISD) was founded in July 2011 when owner, Tommy Burkett saw the need for a sign language interpreting service agency that focused on customer satisfaction and prompt service delivery. With over 25 years of interpreting experience, SCISD director of interpreting services, Josie McDaniel-Burkett, has earned the trust of the Deaf and interpreting communities across South Carolina. In her previous role as the manager of interpreting services for the midlands region for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, Josie provided excellent customer service for a variety of private companies and state agencies and her reputation for doing “whatever it takes” to make sure interpreters are available when needed has continued with her work for SCISD.

With a roster of 65+ highly qualified interpreters and the largest number of nationally certified interpreters of any agency across the state of South Carolina, SCISD is committed to providing the highest level of ethical and professional service to ensure satisfaction for both our Deaf and hearing clients. SCISD interpreters can be found interpreting in the state house, medical settings, mental health behavioral centers, legal settings, local theatres, post-secondary settings, vocational rehabilitation job sites, and manufacturing centers just to name a few. Our interpreters are experienced, professional, reliable and flexible and can be trusted to main-tain confidentiality and behave ethically in all situations.

SCISD currently provides interpreting services to over a hundred privately owned companies, state agencies, national corporations, and federal agencies.
