Frequently Asked Questions - Scheduling An Interpreter

How can I request an interpreter? We invite you to contact us in the way that is most convenient for you.  For companies with multiple staff members authorized to schedule, we are happy to create a standard form for your employees to use to avoid confusion.  Feel free to call, email, or fax requests to our office.  You may also submit a request here.

What information will I need to provide when I’m ready to schedule?

  • Appointment day and date

  • Start and approximate end time

  • On-site contact person and phone number

  • On-site address

  • Any site specifics (suite number, meeting room, security/access code, parking information)

  • Type of appointment

  • Name of client

  • Billing information (if you are a new client)

  • Purchase order, if required by your agency

How much notice do you need to schedule an assignment? It depends on the need.  Generally, we prefer that you request one week in advance, however we accept last-minute requests and make every effort to find a qualified interpreter for your need.  Court assignments tend to be more difficult to fill on short notice, due to the shortage of certified court interpreters in SC.

How many interpreters will I need? Most assignments only require one interpreter, however depending on the duration and complexity of your assignment, you may need to secure two interpreters.  We will always discuss specifics before securing interpreters for you and provide an accurate quote upon request.  SCISD will use a team approach for any assignments lasting more than 90 minutes without multiple breaks, as well as for any stage assignments, conferences, presentations, or court assignments lasting more than 60 minutes.

Why would I need more than one interpreter? This is always based on duration and complexity of the assignment.  Using a team will promote accuracy and prevent errors.  Interpreting is mentally taxing on both the client and interpreter, in addition to the physical toll for the interpreter.  When more than one interpreter is present, the interpreters will rotate every 15-20 minutes so that they stay “fresh”.

How can I cancel an interpreter I have already scheduled? We understand that things happen, and we will do our best to work with you when they do.  We just ask that you provide 48 hours notice whenever possible, so that we can reassign our interpreter to another job.  Just send an email to let us know that you won’t be needing our services, or call if you need to cancel an assignment on the day it’s scheduled.
